Ice skating is a great way to have fun while staying physically fit. The Learn to Skate program offers a range of classes to fit everyone's needs from AGES 3 to ADULT.

The program is a stepping-stone to prepare skating skills for hockey, freestyle skating, and recreational.

Class Descriptions

Parent Tot                                                                 

• For skaters ages 3-5 with little or no skating experience
• Learn basic balance and skating skills in a fun introductory class
• Parent or adult friend will accompany skater on the ice
• Participating adults must be able to skate

Snowplow Sam 1                                                

• For skaters ages 3-5 with little or no skating experience
• Learn basic balance and skating skills
• A fun introductory class in an age appropriate setting

Snowplow Sam 2-3                                            

• For skaters ages 3-5 who have passed Snowplow Sam 1
• Or who have previously taken skating lessons
• Develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on ice

Basic 1                                                                 
• For skaters ages 6 -11
• Learn the basic fundamentals of skating to begin Hockey, Freestyle Skating, and Speed

Teen                                                                    
• For skaters ages 12-17
• Skate with your friends while learning the fundamentals of skating

Basic 2-5                                                             
• Passed Basic 1 or Snowplow Sam 3
• Classes cover basic fundamental skating skills: forward, backward, glides, stops, edges, crossovers, turns, etc
• Skills build on each level as the skater progresses

Hockey 1-4                                                         
• For all age skaters who have passed Snowplow 3 or Basic 1
• Designed to learn and develop skating skills necessary for hockey
• Skaters may wear full hockey gear. Sticks will be provided during class time, no stick use on practice ice area

Edge 1-5                                                           
• Skaters receive a 30-minute practice, a 30-minute instruction and a 20-minute off-ice class +2 additional practice ice time a week
• Class will include freestyle: jumps and spins and edge work

Speed (not offered Session 4&5)                                
• Skaters that have passed Basic 4
• Learn techniques to make you the fastest and strongest skater on the ice

Adult                                                                
• For skaters 18 and older
• Designed for mature skater interested in learning how to skate
• Classes are geared towards skaters ability

30 Minute Class/30 Minute Practice:

 

  • Skaters will meet at the colored boards on the ice for their 30 minute class, corresponding with the color on their name tag.
  • Nametags will be located on the table near the entrance to Rink 3.
  • Practice ice is available for LTS skaters only, parents and siblings are not allowed on the ice.  Skaters must be able to skate on their own to utilize the monitored practice area.
  • Skaters will be evaluated the 2nd to last session.  They will be given an evaluation form that recommends the next level.

 

Registration Procedure:

  • Current Student Registration:  Current students may register for the next session after their evaluation, the second to last week of the session.  It is recommended do so to reserve their spot.
  • Open Registration: This is open to the public, or previous skaters that were not enrolled it the previous session. 
  • Phone In Registration: Registrations will be accepted over the phone at (248) 601-6699.
  • Refund/Credit Policy: Please be aware there is a NO refund policy. 
  • Skate Rental: Skate rental may be prepaid at the time of registration, the price is the same if prepaid or if paid each week individually.  If enrolled in Wednesday or Friday morning or afternoon classes the fee is $2/week.  If enrolled in Wednesday or Friday evening or Saturday classes the fee is $3/week. 
  • 50% Off Open Skate Pass: LTS skaters will be given a 50% off pass to attend any Onyx open skating session.  The pass may me used multiple times.  The skater must present the pass at the front desk during open skating hours.  The pass will expire the last day of the session.
