Ryan received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1990 following a four-year playing career with the Wolverines hockey team. A 1986 draft pick of the New Jersey Devils, Ryan earned his Master's Degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago while also serving as their Graduate Assistant Coach between 1990-92.
